Edward hatch, born in 1832 in bangor, maine, rose quickly in the ranks of the benjamin grierson's cavalry raid through mississippi during the vicksburg campaign. From the twenty seventh day of april eighteen hundred and sixty.
Grierson rode south from la grange with 1,700 men: colonel reuben loomis’ 6th illinois cavalry, colonel edward prince’s 7th illinois cavalry, and colonel edward hatch’s 2nd iowa cavalry, along with a battery of six 2-pounders.
